The ability of one gene to have many effects is called pleiotropy. Some of the effects may be major and others may be minor.

In man, the gene producing the disease phenylketonuria also produces abnormal phenotypic traits such as mental retardation, widely placed incisors, pigmented patches on the skin and excessive sweating. Hereditary disease sickle cell anaemia is also an example of pleiotropy
