Since his childhood Socrates was thoughtful. He observed everything very carefully. As he grew up to manhood he never seemed to want wealth and beautiful things. He became a familiar figure in the streets of Athens and people gathered round him. He wandered through the market place and taught some new ideas to his pupils. He used to question his listeners and tried to put new ideas in the minds of his pupils. He told his listeners to use their reasons and thus find out what was just, right, true and beautiful. He said that only by educating the citizens' minds could Athens become a perfect state. Also he said that there were higher and nobler things to be done by the citizens than offereing sacrifice to Athene. Many young men became his pupils. His fame spread far and wide and he became familiar as a teacher.
