As Socrates grew in years he became famous as a teacher. He was a thoughtful man. He wandered through the streets and market place and went on talking to his disciples. Sometimes he left his listeners in a confused state. Socrates believed that everyone should think for himself so that by using reason he could find out what was right and what was wrong. He said that by using reason one might see what was true and beautiful and so shape his own conduct.

He taught that Athens could be a perfect state only when her citizens were educated to see what was right and noble. Such teachings of Socrates were quite new and people had never really thought of them. Some people, specially the enemies of Socrates thought his teachings as wicked. They thought that he was spoiling the young men of Athens.
