Find the ratio in which the y-axis divides the line segment joining the points (4, −5) and (−1,2). Also find the point of intersection.

Let the required point on the y axis be P(0,y)

Let AP : PB be k : 1 

Therefore, (−k+4)/(k+1) = 0 

⇒k=4 

Therefore, the required ratio is 4:1 

and y = (8−5)/5 = 3/5 

Hence point of intersection is (0,3/5)
