The first day of Huw's work under the coal mine was quite interesting. Ivor told him how to work. Ivor and Huw put off their coats and shirts. Then the candles were lighted. Ivor showed Huw what to do. The flames of the candles went up to about six inches. Ivor said that he would cut the coal and asked Huw to push the coal down. Then Huw was asked to go down and load Ivor's tram. Thus Ivor and Huw started to work. Ivor picked coal for long time and then rested. Huw also took rest. They continued to work for hours together. sometimes they worked lying on their back. The dust of coal fell on them lightly. Huw had been surrering from some fear during his stay under the coal mine. Huw and Ivor took tea to clear their throats of coal dust. After a hard day's work Huw, Ivor and the other miners came out of the pit in the evening. They really felt better at the touch of the fresh air on top of the pit. On the whole Huw's first journey into the coal mine was an interesting one.
